Just like humans pets can be subseptible to colds and flu. In cats and dogs cold and flu syptoms are a result of a virus. If left untreated a viral infection could lead to a more serious bacterial infection such a pnamonia. Consult your vet for treatment and preventative measures to boost your pets immune system.

Here are some syptoms to look for:

Cats:
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Eye and nasal discharge
  • Ulcers
  • Breathing difficulties

 Dogs:
  • Moist, soft cough
  • Thick, nasal discharge
  • Rapid, labored breathing

In felines common cold syptoms are caused by various organisms such as feline rhinotrachetitis virus (herpes virus) or the feline calcivirus  . In dogs cold symptoms are caused by Bordatella and Flu virus. Poor sanitation and and nutrition as well as stress can weaken your pets immune system causing colds and flu.  A Respitory infection can occur due to and overcrowded, humid conditions with poor ventilation like kennels and shelters.

Diagnosing the cold or flue should be done by your vet based on symptoms and a full check up as well as a blood sample.

Good nutirtion, plenty of fluids, keeping your pet warm and comfy as well as bed rest will help your pets get back on their feet. Since they may experience a loss of smell warming your pets food may help. Regular vaccinations will also help to keep these infections at bay. However, if a secondary bacterial infection develops as a result of the viral infection; your vet may prescribe antibiotics.

Natural and holistic treatments have proven to be highly effective in providing relief for humans as well as pets with respiratory problems. Treatments such as herbal and homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle to use without any negative side effects.

Carefully selected herbs such as Verbascum thapsus (Mullein leaves) and Sambucus nigra (Elder flowers) strengthen the respiratory system including the nose, lungs and throat. Homeopathic ingredients such as Calc.sulph, Ferrum phos and Hepar.sulph help to maintain open airways, clear noses and eyes, and support a healthy immune system.
